Psalm 84:6 · A songbook for the pilgrim road

Valley of Baca Music

Christian songs of love, light, victory, mystery, and depth — for the road that passes through sorrow without making sorrow its home.

“Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well…”
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Not only to hear

Learn the words. Sing the hymns.

One reason these songs were made is so the words can be learned and carried in the heart. The recordings are here not only for listening, but to help individuals, families, churches, and fellow believers become familiar with the lyrics and sing them as hymns.

That is also why every song page gives the complete words alongside the recording. As the music plays, the current lyric line is gently highlighted so you can follow the hymn, learn it, and sing along. Colossians 3:16 gives the pattern: the word of Christ dwelling richly among believers through “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.”

Because the music and lyrics are public domain, you are welcome to print them, teach them, arrange them for your congregation, or make your own recordings.

The name

A valley made into a well.

Psalm 84 pictures pilgrims whose strength is in God, passing through the valley of Baca on the way toward Zion. The exact physical identification is uncertain; the name has long been associated with weeping and with a hard or thirsty passage.

The image is not of people settling in the valley, but passing through it. What could have been only a place of tears becomes a place of wells, rain, refreshment, and renewed strength. That movement — sorrow toward consolation, darkness toward light, pilgrimage toward the presence of God — gives this music its name.

Psalm 84:6 · KJV

“Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.”
